The judging process is conducted with full transparency and in the most professional manner possible. This has served to raise the profile of the award and to provide publishers with a greater incentive to submit their best books to the award.
Entries are evaluated by a judging panel which chooses the longlist, shortlist and winner. The judging panel is composed of five members with a broad and diverse range of qualifications and specialisations particularly in the field of children's literature (such as publishers, authors, critics, illustrators, and judging experts), one of whom serves as the Chairperson. None of the judges are allowed to have any of their works submitted for the award. To ensure full transparency, the identity of the members of the jury is kept secret and only revealed with the announcement of the winning book.
The evaluation of the entries is based on a set of criteria related to the external appearance of the book, the text as well as illustrations, layout and production.
